NHS Wales Succession Strategy
The NHS Wales Succession Strategy (2017-27) outlines a clear ambition to deliver a pipeline of talent from within NHS Wales, at local and national levels. Implementation will result in a systematic and planned strategic effort across NHS Wales to attract, retain, develop and motivate high-performing staff who meet the short, medium and long-term needs of organisations. The strategy is based on equity of opportunity, will widen access to support and promote opportunities, resulting in diverse leadership pipelines.
Some considerable work has been achieved in support of the strategy over the last 2 years including:
Establishment of a national Talent Management Board and Talent and Succession Operational Group to assist in steering the direction of travel for Wales and driving a national, co-productive approach to succession planning.
Establishment of an Aspiring Executive Talent Pool (2020) and Development Framework.
Development of an Executive Success Profile which outlines leadership behaviours, experiences, strengths/traits and motivations and supports the identification of aspiring senior and executive leader readiness.
Integration of a digital talent management solution which will increase visibility of ‘ready now’ talent and provide intelligence about where robust succession pipelines exist, along with areas of vulnerability which may require targeted interventions.
The Strategy, now 5 years into a 10 year plan, is currently being reviewed and will be updated as required, to ensure it remains current and reflects the evolving context and changing needs of NHS Wales.
