Why Promoting Health and Wellbeing matters
Healthier colleagues deliver better care. When colleagues are fatigued, stressed and burnt out they are more likely to make errors that can affect patient safety. When colleagues are able to look after their wellbeing and are physically and mentally well, they are more engaged, compassionate, and more able to deliver high quality and safe care.
As a manager/leader you can play a pivotal role in setting the tone for workplace culture, influence employee engagement, and directly impact the day-to-day experience, health and well being of colleagues. Ensuring colleague wellbeing is prioritised is key and it doesn’t have to be difficult to achieve. its the little things that make a difference;
- Lead by example, role model healthy behaviours, take breaks, value your own wellbeing.
- Foster open health and wellbeing conversations, listen to feedback and help and support improvement.
- Monitor staff workload and adjust as necessary
- Check in with the team, look for signs of burnout and stress and help colleagues to address issues
- Support and champion flexible working arrangements to promote an adequate work life balance
- Recognising and appreciating staff efforts to boost morale and motivation
- Creating a fair and respectful environment, tackling bullying, harassment, or discrimination
- Sign post colleagues to relevant health and wellbeing support
- Encourage colleagues to implement wellbeing interventions as part of the working day
- Providing clear, consistent communication
- Facilitate reflective practice and support spaces
