Programme Structure

As an intern, you’ll work across a range of teams and topics that reflect the breadth of NHS Wales. The programme follows a blended model, giving you hands-on experience and a potential pathway into future NHS careers, including:

  • Mentorship from experienced professionals
  • Training tailored to your development
  • Guided visits to departments across the organisation

Benefits also include:

  • NHS Wales Band 2 rate of £12.26 per hour for Summer Internship
  • NHS Wales Band 4 rate of £13.77 per hour for the Year-long Internship.
  • Both internships offer additional benefits, including paid annual leave, eligibility for the NHS pension scheme, and access to health service discounts.

Across different teams, you might explore topics such as service improvement, workforce development, digital transformation, education and training, and organisational culture.

Year-Long Internship Programme

The year-long Internship Programme is an opportunity , where the successful interns will have the chance to develop further national/regional projects in different areas of HEIW, ensuring valuable work experience and witnessing first-hand the day-to-day challenges of the NHS.

Requirements

This Internship Programme is aligned to the HEIW agile working approach and Interns are expected to work a minimum of 2 days in the office in Ty Dysgu, Nantgarw.

We are looking for students with a desire to make a difference and experience working within NHS Wales, with the prospect of embarking on a career in NHS Wales.

You will be working alongside inspirational and dynamic leaders, as well as a mentor and a buddy.

Meet the Team

Amy Whitehead, Programme Support Manager

Amy has worked in NHS Wales since 2013, building a varied career and gaining a wide range of skills through different roles. In 2020, she joined HEIW, which she regards as a significant milestone in her professional journey.

In 2024, Amy progressed to the Leadership Team, where she oversees the Intern Programme and is dedicated to nurturing emerging talent. She works closely with interns and feels privileged to support their development throughout the programme. Amy is particularly proud to see interns continue their careers within NHS Wales, reflecting the programme’s commitment to empowering future leaders and facilitating personal and professional growth.

Managers and Mentors

Interns also receive support from both a Manager and a Mentor within their respective teams. These assignments may vary annually, depending on the projects available.
