Aspiring Executive Talent Pool: The Process

To apply for the Aspiring Executive Talent Pool, please follow these steps:

STAGE 1: Apply to join the Aspiring Executive Talent Pool

When submitting an application to join the Aspiring Executive Talent Pool, you will be asked to supply your name, email, current position and other key information / eligibility criteria. Equality and diversity information will also be requested.

You may wish to complete the online Aspiring Executive Director Self Reflective Tool based on the Executive Success Profile. This will support better understanding of the expectations of leading at this level, and allow you to reflect on potential transition and development requirements prior to submitting your application.

STAGE 2: Eligibility Screening

Your submission will be reviewed to ensure you meet essential criteria outlined below:

• Currently employed by NHS Wales
• Report to an Executive Director/Board or equivalent
• Next step career move is to an Executive/Board Director level position
• Ready for promotion within the next 2 years.

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements, you will be contacted by HEIW and signposted to alternative development opportunities.
If you do meet the eligibility requirements, you will be requested to submit additional statements in support of your application.

STAGE 3: Submit Supporting Statements

Your supporting statements will provide key information on your motivation, experience and transition /development needs required to successfully progress to a Executive /Board position.

Organisational endorsement via a executive sponsor will also be required at this stage to ensure local support for your development as part of the Aspiring Executive Talent Pool. This could be provided by your Chief Executive, Line manager or alternate Executive Director.

STAGE 4: Validation of Application

Your application and supporting statements will be reviewed and presented to an All Wales Executive Talent and Succession Validation Panel consisting of Chief Executives/ Chairs. Your executive sponsor may also be invited to panel discussions as required.

This panel will make the decision on prioritisation for the Aspiring Executive Talent Pool 2023-2025.

STAGE 5: Confirmation

If your application is successful, you will receive a letter of acceptance and further information regarding the Aspiring Executive Talent Pool Launch Event and Development offer. You will also be provided an account on the Gwella Leadership Portal and admitted into the Aspiring Executive Talent Pool Network 2023-25.

Should your application not be prioritised to join the 2023-25 Talent Pool, you will be informed by HEIW, provided with a 'Gwella' account, and continued leadership development signposting, as well as be put in touch with a local contact to support your continued development.
