About HEIW

At Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), our Culture, Leadership and Succession (CLS) team leads a range of key workstreams designed to support and develop current and future NHS leaders across Wales.

These portfolios reflect our commitment to building a more collective, compassionate leadership culture. Working with stakeholders and professionals from across the system, our work aims to deliver meaningful support for NHS staff—ultimately improving experiences for patients and the wider workforce.

Mental Health Leadership

Staff retention is a vital part of sustaining and growing our NHS workforce to meet the increasing and changing service demands that we face. The National Retention Programme has been established to support and enable organisations and colleagues across NHS Wales to improve retention collectively and collaboratively through utilising compassionate leadership approaches to foster working environments and cultures that optimise colleague experience and satisfaction to make NHS Wales a great place to work, thrive and stay.

The Clinical Leadership programme of work is designed to support clinicians across all professions to develop their leadership identity, influence change, build compassionate cultures and drive improvement across healthcare in Wales.

The Talent and Succession portfolio supports NHS organisations to identify, develop, and retain future leaders through strategic succession planning and equitable access to development opportunities.
