Health Board Leadership Hub

Coaching is a development approach based on the use of one-to-one conversations to enhance
an individual’s skills, knowledge or work performance.

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)

This definition of coaching from the CIPD aligns closely with CTM's aim to increase individual growth, enhancing skills, knowledge, and work performance for our staff. Through the use of coaching and mentoring we want to foster a culture of continuous improvement, independence, and accountability. Having a coach empowers leaders across all levels to challenge their perspectives, fostering innovative and improved ways of working. The impact extends to embedding coaching principles within everyday leadership and management practices at CTM. This integration promotes independence and accountability and serves as a motivating force, driving the team towards better patient outcomes.

CTM's Coaching Framework

CTM's coaching approach encompasses a mix of formal qualifications, pathways, and initiatives designed to make coaching accessible at all levels. There are a range of formal qualifications available for CTM staff to become qualified coaches, delivered in partnership with the University of South Wales (USW).

Leadership & Management Programmes like Ignite, Aspire, and Inspire emphasize a coaching style of leadership, urging leaders to reflect on driving accountability, empowering delegation, and fostering ownership within their teams in a healthcare setting.

The collaboration with USW introduces bespoke initiatives, coaching skills sessions, and support for the Coaching Network and Leadership & Management Programs.

Participation in coaching and mentoring at CTM is encouraged through these initiatives, aiming to increase the profile of coaching across the Health Board. By engaging in coaching, staff members not only develop their coaching skills but also contribute to the organisation's overall improvement. Outlined below is the CTM's Coaching Pathway, which provides a clear roadmap for staff to enhance their coaching skills and effectively apply them within the organisation.
