HEIW and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board win CIPD Award for improving employee investigations across NHS Wales

Team holding awardOn Friday 15 March, Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) won the ‘Change Management Initiative’ award at the 2024 CIPD in Wales Awards.
The prestigious award recognises the success of a collaborative project which is supporting NHS Wales organisations reduce avoidable employee harm by improving the delivery of their disciplinary policies and processes. Read more about it .

Reducing avoidable employee harm by improving the application of the disciplinary policy and process

Andrew Cooper photoIn March 2023, Health Education and Improvement Wales launched a programme of work to support NHS Wales organisations improve the delivery of their disciplinary policies – focussing on the importance of looking after the individuals involved, as well as the application of the process itself.
The programme, originally developed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s (ABUHB), HR and Employee Wellbeing Service had identified an overuse of its disciplinary policy. In its first thirteen months, it saw a reduction of 71% in the number of investigations it commissioned, along with related estimated savings in sickness absence (3,000+ days) and direct financial costs (over £700,000). HEIW supports award-winning programme to improve employee investigations in NHS Wales

group photoHealth Education and Improvement Wales are delighted to be working with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to roll out their ‘improving employee investigations’ programme across NHS Wales.
Last month, the programme won both the workforce wellbeing and overall ‘Outstanding contribution to transforming health and care’ categories in this year’s NHS Wales Awards. It also received an award from the UK’s Association for Business Psychology for ‘Excellence in Health and Wellbeing’ and a Healthcare Honours Award for employee experience. Read more about it.

The new Improving Employee Investigations Hub

four people having a conversationHealth Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) have launched a new resource on their Gwella platform to support those who are responsible for commissioning and leading disciplinary investigations. The online hub draws on work developed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) to improve its employee investigations process, which is now being embraced more widely within NHS Wales. Visitors will have the opportunity to read expert blogs, examining the psychological impact of being taken through an investigation process; providing a legal perspective on why it’s important that processes are run correctly; developing an understanding of the financial impact of an over excessive use of formal HR policies to address work place issues. New training urges NHS Wales employers to make employee relations investigations the last resort

The event highlighted the harm that investigation processes can cause to individuals being investigated, as well as those involved in the process. It also considered the potential harm to an organisation’s culture and reputation, diverting time and resources away from delivering its core business. Read more about it.
